The Nature of a Shot
Mother Nature has been having a field day here in California. Our gorgeous days of perpetual sunshine and climbing temperatures have been replaced with cold, wet, dreariness.
And I LOVE it.
I am not a native of this ridiculous climate of sun, warmth and no rain for ten months of the year. A part of me secretly rejoices when the Mother Nature decides to pull a fast one. And send in the rain.
So the other day as the clouds grew darker and the breeze picked up and the temps grew chillier, I waited in hopeful anticipation. And then it happened! RAIN FELL FROM THE SKY. For about 8 minutes.
My first response was to run through my backyard's wet grass in my bare feet, to twirl in circles as the drops fell from the heavens and then cart-wheel across the lawn. My California born and bred children, just stood there. Dumb-founded. And I'm pretty sure they were shocked by the CRAZY behavior of this wild weather. And not their mother's (ahem) crazy behavior.
But my second response was to grab my camera and take a few pictures of my littles. Sam, willing only to go out in this rain with an umbrella in hand, gave me this shot. I love that it shows two natures: both his quiet, serious nature and the lovely, wet gift of Mother Nature.
(Aperture Priority, 1/125, f/3.5, 50 mm, ISO 200)
This is a SOOC (Straight Out Of the Camera) shot as I took it that rainy morning. And I thought I would show you the nature of my work flow and the steps I took to create the edited version below.
I try to minimize my editing and as often as possible, just take good pictures to begin with, but I have found that some simple editing can sometimes transform a decent shot into a delicious one.
I use Photoshop CS4, primarily with Actions, for editing, and so opened this image to play with it. I knew this would make a great Black and White image because of the strong contrasts of the washed out background and very dark umbrella. So I ran these actions in Photoshop:
- Adjusted curves to lighten
- Powder Room to smooth skin and brighten eyes (Coffeeshop Free download)
- PW B & W @60% opacity, deleted burnt edge layer (PW Actions Free download)
- Flatten
- Touch of Dark/ Touch of Light) @70% opacity to darken umbrella (MCP Free download)
- Define This! @100% opacity to sharpen water drops on umbrella (PW Actions Free download)
- Flatten
- Cropped and slight rotate
- Resized for web
And that produced this image:

Nature sure has a way of changing things up. And I just love the results.

Sam bears the image of his fathers well!!
I love it! I love the detail in the picture. It looks amazing in black and white.
I also love your reaction to the rain...that is too fun! :)
Excellent before and after! Thanks for including your camera settings and the editing process. I love to see someone else's process!!!
Oh, and I'm so with you on the rain!!!
Awesome awesome shot!

Wow! I really love the raindrops! Thanks for the clear step-by-step edits.
I too am loving this rare California summer weather. We didn't get rain, but our usual highs for this time of year is 100+, and the past two weeks have been low 80s. No smog and blue skies with white fluffy clouds. It is so awesome that we have been going to the park!

Both of those shots are awesome. You did a great job with this!
That is a great shot! Well done! I love the editing as well. Thank you for sharing your settings on the photo. It was a fantastic picture!
Great shot! Wish I knew how to do all that editing.
Beautiful photo. Love the post processing!
Great black and white shot of Sam. If you came east you would see rain every day all day.
I love that picture! I'm sucker a for black & white photos! Very cool!
The edited shot is amazing!
I loved the first shot, and then saw the edited one and loved it too! Rain is a totally anomaly around these parts too. Whenever it does rain my FB home page is always filled with updates about the strange substance falling from the sky. It's pretty amusing!
I felt the same way when I lived in CA...I missed the thunderstorms that we had in Miami. Now I live in NC and we get them all the time!
Great job w/ the edit! It really made the photo special!! Love the b&w conversion!
I played too!
Wonderful capture and editing.
Well, see, that's why *I* didn't go out and get all crazy in my backyard yesterday (no, not because I would dumbfound my dudes ... not to mention the neighbors!) ... but because *I* didn't get my 8 minutes of rain yesterday. sniff sniff.
lovely b/w conversion!
Wow. I love it. So perfect.
Beautiful shot and great edit, too!
Thanks for stopping by! And the black and white is a great choice--it's timelessly classy. I love it now his face has all the attention. Well done.
Fantastic post! I can't imagine missing rain, but maybe if I was out of the midwest long enough I would ;) Also, thank you SO MUCH for the editing info.
Great Pic to begin with, and neat enhancements.
how much time did you take to edit?
Beautiful!
wow

love them both, but to see before and after just makes me WANT some editing software!
I love the way you processed this image, but more than that, oh my goodness, the look on his face is adorable!
Also, thanks for the walk-through on how you created the image. I always learn a little something from those and this time I learned about MCP. So thank you!
Love love LOVE!!! Beautiful processing!
Oh, I love umbrella photos! How pretty. And thanks for the editing info, it is always so interesting to hear what other people do!
The original was wonderful, but I love the edited version so much! Thank you so much for taking the time to explain your editing!
Wow! You really switched the emphasis from the umbrella to the face with this edit! Beautiful work!
